Comuna 13 is the most visited part of Medellín and the most misunderstood. It is a hillside district of roughly a dozen barrios on the western side of the valley, best known abroad for a violent chapter in its history and known locally for what came after it: outdoor escalators built into the slope, a dense concentration of murals, and a community that turned its own story into an economy.
It is also somebody's street. Almost everything that makes a visit go badly comes from treating it as an attraction rather than a place, so this guide covers the logistics first and the etiquette second, because both matter.
Take Metro Line B to San Javier station. From there it is a short ride by local bus, taxi or a booked car up to the escalator entrance, or a steep walk if you would rather earn it. Going by metro is straightforward, cheap, and far less stressful than driving into narrow hillside streets that were not built for visiting cars.
You can walk the escalator route independently and see the murals without paying anyone. What you cannot do on your own is understand what you are looking at, because the art references specific events, people and places that carry no explanation. Guides who grew up in the neighborhood give the visit its point, and hiring one keeps the money in the barrio. Compare guides on whether they are actually from Comuna 13, group size, duration, and whether transport from your area is included.
A series of covered outdoor escalators climbing the hillside in sections, connected by walkways and viewpoints that look back across the valley. Along the route: murals and graffiti that are repainted often, small shops, street food, music, dance performances, and a lot of other visitors. The busiest stretch is short. If you want a quieter version of the same place, the surrounding streets away from the escalators are where daily life happens.
Mornings on weekdays are the calmest and the coolest. Weekend afternoons are the fullest, most festive, and hardest to move through. Rain will send everyone under the canopies at once, and the hillside gets slick, so check the forecast before committing to an afternoon slot.
Ask before photographing people, especially children, and accept a no. Buy something from the vendors and performers whose presence makes the route what it is. Do not treat the neighborhood's past as a photo backdrop or ask residents to narrate their trauma on demand. Nothing here requires special caution beyond ordinary city sense: keep your phone secure, watch your belongings in crowds, and stay on the routes your guide uses.
